Catawba College head coach Chip
Hester announced the signing of New Hanover kicker Thomas
Trexler shortly before spring practices began in early March.
Trexler had been a sought after kicker ever since his strong
showing at the 2006 Chris Sailer National Kicking Event.
As a senior, he connected on
eight of ten field goal attempts, while nailing 25 out of 29
PATs. At the Chris Sailer event, Trexler finished second in the
field goal competition and took third place in the punting
competition. Over 110 kickers and punters participated in the
field goal and punt contests, including individuals who signed
Division IA scholarships.
Trexler's player profile on
Sailer's website has him ranked among the top 50 kickers
nationally, ahead of Cincinnati commit Danny Milligan, Baylor's
Ben Parks, and Oregon State's Ryan Allen.
Three-year starter Cory Darnell
looks forward to his return at kicker after making five of 12
field goal attempts and 44 of 48 extra point attempts. His
kicking ability thus far in the spring has been superb and will
be tough to beat out for the starting job.
Former preseason All-SAC
place-kicker DJ Gill was around the team in its very first
scrimmage and his possible return will boost Catawba's special
teams dramatically.
On March 17, recruiting
coordinator DJ Summers reported that acclaimed Hillside wide out
Ronnie Williams signed a letter of intent to play for the
Indians next fall.
Williams has all of the physical
tools to one day replace two-time All-SAC wide out Brent
Johnson, who was a key cog to Catawba's 2007 SAC title. Williams
stands 6'4 190 pounds and led the Hillside Hornets to an 11-3
record.
During his senior season,
Williams hauled in 42 catches for 893 yards and 11 touchdowns.
At the 2007 Shrine Bowl Combine held at Greene Central High
School, Williams had the event's highest vertical jump at 34.4
inches.
The addition of Williams marks
the Tribe's first wide out commit from the 2008 recruiting
class. The Indians added another commit at receiver, but he will
arrive at that position with little experience.
Kaleb Curtis, a 5'9 185 pound
quarterback, will move to receiver after standout junior and
senior seasons.at Montgomery County High School in Mount
Sterling, KY. He was also named the 5A-District 6 Player of the
Year and quarterbacked the Eastern Kentucky All-Star team in the
inaugural Border Bowl Championship game.
As a junior, Curtis completed 81
of 163 pass attempts for 1,100 yards and six touchdowns, while
rushing for 968 yards and 13 touchdowns. He passed for 1,264
yards as a senior, while rushing for 932 yards and 15
touchdowns.
The four-year production from
Brent Johnson, Joe Mitchell, and Lee Page will be sorely missed,
but the Tribe learned of some more devastating news in the past
two weeks.
Wide out Geron Bryant suffered a
spring-ending injury during the team's first day of contact
drills on Friday, March 14th. Bryant transferred to Catawba last
fall from Palm Beach Community College and took a redshirt
during the Indian's 11-2 season.
He is expecting a full recovery
by the time the 2008 season begins in August.
